Natal is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. With 800.000 inhabitants Natal is a small city by Brazilian standards. Natal is the easternmost point of South America and thus historically closely linked to Europe because of the relatively short distance. As Natal is only 600 km below the Equator there is summer all year with an average temperature of 25-32 degrees. A little kind of rainy season may be expected in the months May and June, but the climate has changed the last years with much more rain than previously years. |

Natal Natal has been appointed as the safest major city in Brazil, but you must not forget your sanity. Especi- ally when you walk in the poor areas or when you go home after dark. Here it is recommended always to take a Taxi, which incident-ally is using taximeter and generally is pleasant and reliable people.
Natal has everything from poor areas near the port to large modern shopping centers and is connected to the north of the beauty-ful new bridge, which opened in 2008. In Natal some employed in the hotels speak a little bit of English. But on the streets and in shops you must either use finger language, learn a little Portuguese or resort to paper when a price has to be negotiated or you ask for directions. |
