Despite the facts that we did not have any experience in riding and that we after 5 visits thought we knew Maracajaú, the 3 hours in the area on horseback was a really great experience, definitely recommendable. Horse trips can be booked on the beach at Ma-Noa Park, or when you meet the man around town.
The tour started in PDC and then the tour went along the beach towards Ma-Noa Park. Then we went around Maracajaú and out of the road to the big rainy lakes on the outskirts of town. Here there was time for a refreshing dip before the trip back was in full gallop over the largest sand dunes. The tour ended with a much-needed refreshment at a restaurant by the beach, where the horse man and his helper had time for a little chat.

We started the trip westward to Acari with a visit to the nature reserve Serra Caiada, which is 75 km from Natal. After a lunch stop in Santa Cruz with 54m high religious Santa Rita statue, we drove to the mountain village of Cerro Cora, where we arrived while the city's children were performing "the crucifixion of Jesus." In Cerro Cora, located at 600 m altitude, there was fortunately space on the city's only Hotel and for 20 Real per person we had an exquisite room. Saturday morning we spent a few hours at the market and downtown, before we drove through Currais Novo to Acari. The peace around the large, beautiful lake and dam were enjoyed for an hour before we drove non stop 225 km back to Natal, which on the Brazilian highways took over 3 hours.

An exciting excursion only 135 km from Natal is the castle with the white towers, located 15 km from Sitio Novo. We mana-ged, to find one guide in Natal who knew the place and with her help and language skills, it was a fantastic experience. In Sitio Novo goes a "nonexistent" dirt road up the hill to the village of Serra da Tapuia. Here lives the 78 years old and very religious Zé do Monte in a large stone house just outside town.
He lives close to the castle he claims that he as 11 years of age, in a vision of the Virgin Mary, was ordered to build. After more than 20 years the castle finally was completed in 1984 and the following years he lived there without electricity and water. Nowadays he walks badly, so the children from the town make the tour in the castle and labyrinths for him, while they chase the snakes away.

In Maracajaú are a small supermarket and a couple of small grocers and some private homes, which sell small necessities. All other small shops in Maracajaú are almost replaced every year, because with 2000 inhabitants and few overnight tourists, it’s almost impossible to operate a shop.
Major purchases should be done before you leave Natal and if you stay long in Maracajaú, it’s necessary to do a shopping trip to Natal or Touros. Conversely, are the small daily purchases of meat, fruit, bread and drinks much cheaper in Maracajaú, so you can benefit from supporting the local people and simultaneously build up local friendship.

Maracajaú is and remains the heart about the whole project with my holiday home in Brazil, as the city has taken me by storm.
When you in days have went up and down the streets with a camera in your hand, arrives a trust and curiosity of the people, you should look long after. Therefore, I refer to them as the friends in Maracajaú.
Maracajaú may work completely deserted, but it's only a matter of learning to know the city's rhythm. At low tide all activities are in dive centers and in the afternoon there is life on and around the main street, and in the city's few shops. If you take a walk in the side streets, then you are seeing boys playing football on a miserable football field or families who sits in front of their homes talking or playing cards.

Original Brazil tour goes through Goianinha to Pedra da Boca. In boiling hot weather, the local guide teaches you how to survive using nature's resources. The guide's family serves deliciously local lunch before going on to a poor family in the countryside. Two of the family's twelve children still live in the modest home, where one of the few rooms are used for the daughter and her newborn child. While the house is open to prying eyes, the wife of the house burns coffee beans during open fire in the kitchen.
The tour ends at a sugar cane farm, where the contrast between the wealthy owners and the poor rural workers shines through. So the farm's workers can work as much as possible, they have their own little chapel with weekly church services for employees.

In Brazil the word Pousada covers all kind of accommodation, from staying in a small hotel to Bed & Breakfast in a simple room. In Maracajaú you find both and if you wish to stay in ordinary small hotel, I recommend to book in advance. If you may settle for a more simple room, it is advisable to go for a walk in town and keep an eye on the signs; Pousada. In Maracajaú there is four major Pousadas, which in each own way, resemble a small hotel with amenities such as breakfast and pool. Cacua Restaurante has also a nice little Pousada with three beautiful furnished rooms with TV and a common room in the middle, so you with advantage can book the whole Pousada and eat in the restaurant, if you travel as a big family or in a large group.

In Alecrim is a big market taking place every Saturday. The market is huge and is divided into sections, so that the stalls offering vegetables are assembled side by side and in the same way those who sell rice, corn and grain. In addition to large sections of meat and fish, there are also sections of live chickens and turkeys. Furthermore you can find volumes of T-shirts, sunglasses, CDs, bags and birds in cages, and much more.
The sellers consist largely of peasants from the countryside, who come to town with their own cultivated vegetables and for many of those this is their only income. There is in Brazil much focus on the health hazards and the lack of tax by trading in this way, so maybe this will cut the last lifeline to those who do not have another job.

Maracajaú Beach is one of the many very spectacular and unspoilt beaches in the area north of Natal. At high tide, the beach almost disappears completely, but hours later it again lie pure and untouched. The beach in Maracajaú is also rough, as the beast and rain can push yards of sand dunes along all the way up the houses. Natural channels of large rivers arise from day to day, but the hallmark of the beach is, that it the day after a storm is unspoiled with white sand and 28°C, crystal clear blue water, which invites you to swimming. On a morning it’s possible to walk along the beach and only come across wild horses and fallen coconuts, before you later on meet children who are playing football or fishermen relaxing on top of today’s work.

Diving with oxygen and diving suit is a completely different experience than snorkeling in the water surface and this is also possible in the sea near Maracajaú.
Diving centers in Maracajaú offer all tours for small groups, where you sail farther out from shore to deeper waters. With guidance and after brief instruction you can try diving with oxygen, but they don’t offer any kind of licensed diving lessons nor requires any diving certificate to participate on the trips and everything is reportedly at your own risk, so be careful and take care.
My friend Rafael Santos from Corais de Maracajaú has with a small camera and the available light, done these beautiful underwater pictures in the sea nearby Maracajaú.

Maracajaú is a popular destination for tourists in Rio Grande do Norte, as one of the largest coral reefs in Brazil are located 7 km off the coast.
